From a harvest of French-American hybrid red grapes grown within picture of Biltmore home, the inaugural classic was bottled in estate Conservatory.

Unsatisfied with the wine (it could later be dubbed “the crush of horror”), Mr. Cecil sought guidance from experts in the world of winemaking at University of Ca at Davis. Although the scientists had been uncertain that vinifera cultivation had been truly possible in western North Carolina due to general developing conditions in your community, they worked closely with Mr. Cecil to advise new advances in grape-growing methods and technology.

Mr. Cecil carried on his energy to realize his dream of making wine at Biltmore by moving the vineyard to your west side of the estate and growing to 150 miles of vinifera grapes. In 1977, Mr. Cecil traveled to France to convince sixth-generation French winemaster Philippe Jourdain to oversee the development of Biltmore wines and also to assist develop the continuing future of what would become the Biltmore home Wine Company.

Into the years since, Biltmore has grown and tested many varietals. Six of them – Riesling, Chardonnay, Viognier, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot – have proven to be specially well-suited for our western North Carolina terroir additionally the microclimate associated with property. We consistently assess various other varietals in an unique test vineyard behind the winery. In an attempt to expand our profile and regularly build the highest high quality wine possible, we also lover with select growers in North Carolina, Washington State, and throughout California, including Sonoma and Napa.

These days, we continue to honor the Vanderbilt heritage of agriculturally based sustainability along with Mr. Cecil’s history. We have been proud of his vision and persistence which have created diversification possibilities in harmony with Biltmore’s goal.
